The Lost City of the Inca´s - Machu Picchu

Today, we went to the big daddy of ruins in Peru - Machu Picchu also known as the lost city of the Inca´s even though the locals knew it was here since the Inca empire was desimated, it wasn´t discovered by non locals until 1911. It´s an amazing place, built on the top of a mountain surrounded by even higher mountains. You can either do a 4 day walk known as the Inca trail, or as we did due to our fitness levels being that of an asmatic grandma, get a bus / train / bus from Cusco. Honestly, words and pictures don´t do it justice. The place is so high up surrounded by the most wonderful scenery (the amazon begins here), totally quiet and ethereal. We were expecting it to be swarmed with stinky backpackers and tourists, but to our surprise it wasn´t overrun with people thankfully (well the standard Japanese tour group, but they are every where).



We spent about 5 hours in total here, with an excellent guide who explained many of the theorys about the place (a female convent, holiday retreat for the Inca royal family), but the truth be told like many things in Peru, nobody actually know´s the purpose. This I guess adds to the mystery and majesty of the place. This has been without a doubt one of the highlights of our entire trip and has to be seen to be beleived.
