Kaikoura

We got a bus to Kaikoura this morning, very excited about this place as it's famous for Whale Watching, we ended up staying at this tiny family run hostel, it was great. We wanted to do two things here - whale watching and deep sea fishing.

Since we had arrived early enough on the Friday we weren't sure what to do during the afternoon, but after a quick chat with Don and Jakki (the owners of the hostel and our surrogate parents while we were there) they advised us to do a walk to a seal colony and then do the peninsula walk. Excited about this we headed of. After a 45 minute walk we came across the seals, it was great to see these big blubbery mammals just lying on rocks taking it easy. You can get pretty close to these bad boys so we took advantage of this and got as close as we could for some cool photo opportunities. On our walk we also came across a little cheeky baby penguin just taking it easy sitting in a rock pool. After spending an hour or say with the seals we decided to get onto the peninsula walk track which involved us having to climb up a huge cliff (the sort you just keep going up and never look down as it was so steep). The walk was lovely, taking in a cliff top path and then eventually going across rolling fields with hay bails and then back down the cliff to our hostel.
